How to Use an American Airlines SWU on a British Airways Flight

In 2022, American Airlines expanded the usefulness of its Systemwide Upgrades by allowing you to redeem them on British Airways flights booked through AA. The process is a bit inconvenient, and there are more rules to watch out for, but this is a fantastic use of a SWU and can save you thousands of dollars on a one-way trip, depending on how you use it.

How to use Systemwide Upgrades on British Airways

A Systemwide Upgrade can be used on any paid British Airways fare (with the exception of Basic Economy tickets purchased on or after May 18, 2026). Award tickets can't be upgraded.

To use a Systemwide Upgrade with British Airways, you must buy your flights through American Airlines. AA clearly labels each leg of your travel with the operating carrier on its results page. SWUs are valid for one-way travel of up to three segments, but to redeem with British Airways, you must book an itinerary that includes at least one American Airlines-marketed flight.

For example, a flight from Columbus (CMH) to London (LHR) through Philadelphia (PHL) qualifies, as your short domestic hop is an AA flight and your transatlantic flight is on British Airways. Throw a Systemwide Upgrade at this trip, and all legs may be upgraded.

To see if your desired British Airways flight has upgrade availability, you'll have to call American Airlines. You can't simply redeem them online, as you can with AA flights.

How do Systemwide Upgrades work on British Airways?

When using a Systemwide Upgrade on an AA flight, it's possible to upgrade from Main Cabin (coach) to Business Class, even on a four-cabin plane. This is typically not the case with British Airways, as a SWU can't fast-track you from coach to business class. Here's what SWUs will grant you on British Airways:

• Economy to Premium Economy
• Premium Economy to Business Class
• Business Class to First Class

The sweet spot here is to pay for Premium Economy seats across the pond, as this will typically be the cheapest way to SWU yourself into a lie-flat seat. On flights where there is no Premium Economy, an Economy ticket will upgrade directly into a Business Class seat.

It's also worth noting that, unlike American Airlines flights, SWUs cannot be waitlisted with British Airways. You'll have to keep calling AA to check on availability.

When can you use Systemwide Upgrades on British Airways?

As you'd expect, SWUs only work with British Airways when there's upgrade inventory. Again, you'll have to call American Airlines to confirm SWU eligibility on your desired flight, but because British Airways pulls its upgrade availability from its award space, you can take a look at its award inventory to get an idea of whether it might be possible to use your SWU.

Often the fastest way to identify probable British Airways upgrade space is through aa.com. For example, if you can book a Business Class award flight on a BA-operated flight with AAdvantage miles, there's a good chance you can buy a Premium Economy ticket on that flight through AA and redeem a Systemwide Upgrade for Business Class.

In short, finding award inventory for a specific flight is a good sign; but you'll still need to call AA to check and reserve SWU availability.

Can you use ExpertFlyer to find upgrade inventory on British Airways?

Although ExpertFlyer doesn't currently give you the ability to directly find SWU availability on British Airways metal as it does for AA-operated flights, you may still be able to use it to track potential upgrade opportunities on British Airways.

Here's why: British Airways pulls its upgrade-eligible seats from its award inventory. If you can book a BA flight with AAdvantage miles, you may be able to use a Systemwide Upgrade for the same seat.

While not infallible, it's possible to use ExpertFlyer's Awards & Upgrades tool to search for BA award space that's bookable through AA. Simply search for AA award space and deselect the "Exclude Codeshares" box to see it.

For example, a British Airways flight between Miami (MIA) and London (LHR) shows ample Business Class availability when booked through American Airlines. You'll typically be looking for available "J" fares as an indication that you can book British Airways flights with American Airlines miles.

Heading to aa.com to confirm availability for that same flight, you can see that business class is, in fact, bookable with AAdvantage miles. Pay no mind to the flight numbers, this happens sometimes with codeshare flights, but you can clearly see it's the same flight by the departure and arrival times.

You can toggle the American Airlines results to paid fares, purchase Premium Economy, and (potentially) use a SWU for the trip.

Again, this strategy may not work for everyone, but if no British Airways award seats are currently bookable with AAdvantage miles, it could be worthwhile to use ExpertFlyer to set a seat alert.

Bottom line

It's possible to redeem AA's Systemwide Upgrades on British Airways metal, but you'll be subject to different rules than if you used them for a seat aboard American Airlines.

To use a SWU on British Airways, book a paid itinerary through American Airlines that includes at least one AA-marketed flight (e.g. Nashville to New York on AA, then New York to London on BA). You'll have to call American Airlines reservations to apply the upgrade. If the agent can't find upgrade availability for that itinerary, you'll have to either keep checking back or change your travel to a date and flight with confirmable upgrade inventory.
