How to use your American Airlines Systemwide Upgrades (SWUs) before they expire and the best redemptions

Overview

Systemwide Upgrades (SWUs) are certificates that let you request one-cabin upgrades on eligible paid American Airlines fares. You can use them for anywhere American Airlines flies, including international flights with fancy lie-flat seats. They can also be used on partner airline British Airways when flying across the Atlantic.

But here's the catch, SWUs can only be used for specific fare classes:

• "A" class — Upgrade from business class to first class on three-cabin flights
• "C" class — Upgrade from main cabin to business on three-cabin flights (or to first on a two-cabin domestic flight)

To earn Systemwide Upgrades, you'll need to earn a whole lot of Loyalty Points, the currency that American Airlines uses to determine your elite status. You won't sniff a SWU until you've earned at least 175,000 Loyalty Points.

When do American Airlines SWUs expire?

Once you earn a Systemwide Upgrade, you'll have the entire status year to use it, as well as the following status membership year (which ends on March 31). For example, if you earn a SWU in December 2026, you'll have until March 31, 2028, to use it.

Best ways to use an AA Systemwide Upgrade

There's no "wrong" time to use a Systemwide Upgrade; use your upgrades whenever they'll make you the happiest. That said, there are specific situations that'll give you a bigger bang for your certificate.

Upgrade long-haul Main Cabin seats to business class

Any long-haul seat in steerage is a great use of a Systemwide Upgrade. You'll get to enjoy the benefit for longer, and the aircraft that serve those routes tend to have better business class products. I recently used a SWU between Los Angeles (LAX) and Miami (MIA) to upgrade my yawn-worth coach seat into five delightful hours in a fancy lie-flat business class seat.

Upgrade Main Cabin to Flagship Business Class

American Airlines operates its Flagship Business class seat on transcontinental routes, as well as certain flights to Hawaii, Asia, Australia, Europe, New Zealand, and South America. This is one of the best business class products AA has to offer.

But even fancier than AA's Flagship Business Class is its Flagship Suite, which debuted in mid-2025. These aren't just lie-flat seats, they're fully-enclosed spaces with sliding privacy doors. In terms of the best business class experience you can get from a U.S. based carrier, American's Flagship Suite is arguably at the top of the totem pole.

Upgrade business class to Flagship First

American Airlines Flagship First is as good as it gets aboard American Airlines. Similar to Flagship Business, Flagship First is reserved for transcontinental flights and flights to Asia, Australia, Europe, and South America. You'll find them aboard eligible Boeing 777-300 and A321T aircraft for domestic flights and Boeing 777-300 for international flights.

If you've never flown a proper first class seat (we're not talking about those domestic first class loungers you'll find aboard regional jets, which are effectively just slightly wider Main Cabin seats), it's an otherworldly experience.

From Flagship First dining—a legit sit-down restaurant within select Admirals Club lounges—to an elevated onboard service, Flagship First is itself a destination of sorts.

Use an expiring SWU for any eligible seat

You may find yourself staring at a Systemwide Upgrade that's soon to expire. In this case, using it for any flight is better than losing it. Even if your redemption won't skyrocket your quality of travel with an ultra fancy seat, your best use is to throw it towards whatever flight you can, even a modest Domestic First seat.

You can also redeem SWUs for others, though you'll have to be the one to make the request for your friend or family member.

How to find confirmable SWU upgrade space

If you already know the exact date you'd like to fly, you can simply head to aa.com and enter your travel details. If the flight offers upgrade inventory, you'll see a "Systemwide upgrade" tag prominently placed below the flight details.

Here's how it works: Head to the Award & Upgrade Availability Search tool and input the date (or range of dates) you'd like to fly. Set American Airlines as the airline. Then select the fare class you want. Again, "A" is for upgrades to First Class on a three-cabin flight, and "C" is an upgrade to Business Class on a three-cabin flight (or Domestic First on a two-cabin airline).

You must also check the "Exclude Codeshares" box to locate SWUs.

You'll then be taken to a results page that lists all flights for your specific date and route. If the "Availability" column shows "0" next to your desired fare class, you can't currently use your SWU on the flight. But by clicking the bell icon in the column to the right, you can set yourself an alert in case availability opens up. This gives you astronomically better odds to land the upgrade you're looking for than those who make intermittent manual checks.

Use the ExpertFlyer SWU Search

ExpertFlyer's SWU Search is an extremely powerful and easy-to-use tool to help you redeem your Systemwide Upgrades. You can enter specific routes, or you can make broader searches, such as "North America" to "Anywhere." You can even search up to 330 days at a time.

The tool offers a calendar that shows you all routes with available dates, including the number of upgradable seats currently available. It's especially great for those with flexible travel plans, as you can find an interesting route with SWU inventory and let the deals guide your travel.

Bottom line

AA's Systemwide Upgrades are one of the best airline status perks in the travel world. The ability to confirm an upgrade to the next class of service could save you several thousand dollars.

The best way to use them is for long-haul international and transcontinental flights to get the fanciest seats. And because they're valid for up to three segments per one-way trip, you could conceivably use them to travel half way across the world in a fancy lie-flat seat.

Just be sure to use your SWUs before they expire. They're valid the entire status year for which you earn them, as well as the next status year, which ends on March 31.
