Search for AA Systemwide Upgrade Availability

SWUs are complimentary upgrade certificates that American Airlines awards to AAdvantage Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum members, earned by accumulating Loyalty Points each year. They upgrade you one class of service on any AA operated flight with no cash copay, on any fare including basic economy. SWUs can be used to upgrade from economy or premium economy to business class (class C) or from business to first on three cabin aircraft (class A).

SWUs expire on March 31, the end of the AAdvantage qualifying year. Unused certificates are forfeited permanently with no extensions and no way to earn them back. One important exception: if you find a future flight with confirmed upgrade inventory before March 31 and call AA to apply the certificate, the upgrade is locked in even if the departure date falls after the expiration.

Systemwide Upgrade Search is available exclusively on the Elite plan. Elite is an annual plan with no free trial. Members on Premium or Basic can still search SWU inventory route by route using the Awards and Upgrades tool.
