Overview
Cathay Pacific currently flies from its hub in Hong Kong (HKG) to several dozen destinations worldwide, including nine North American cities: Seattle (SEA), San Francisco (SFO), Los Angeles (LAX), Dallas (DFW), Chicago (ORD), New York (JFK), Boston (BOS), Vancouver (YVR), and Toronto (YYZ).
You’ll find a snazzy business class seat aboard all of these routes, but only New York and Los Angeles offer first class cabins. Not all Cathay Pacific aircraft serving these cities, however: it’s only touted on Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

When does Cathay Pacific release business class and first class inventory?
If you’re interested in purchasing a business or first class seat with cash, you can often find them nearly a year out. Cathay Pacific typically releases all of its seats 360 days into the future.
Its award seats are a bit trickier, as there’s no firm schedule Cathay Pacific abides by when releasing inventory. It’s sporadic, so you’ll have to closely monitor any routes you’re interested in. It’s worth noting that Cathay Pacific's first class is an absolute unicorn of an award that will take a combination of diligence and luck to secure.
How to search for Cathay Pacific business and first class availability
Search directly through Cathay Pacific
A surefire way to view Cathay Pacific's inventory is by searching through Cathay Pacific’s own site. Just note that to view award flights, you’ll need to first sign into your account, then click the “Redeem with miles” toggle on the flight search page to get your results priced in rewards instead of cash.
Unfortunately, Cathay Pacific doesn’t have an intuitive calendar view to help you search large swathes of dates at once. For cash fares, you can search either business or first class flights specifically and see a week’s worth of availability at once. But for awards, it’s one day at a time.

Partner airlines
Those looking for award availability may have an easier time scanning available dates through a partner website, such as American Airlines or British Airways. These sites offer much better calendar views, so you can search more efficiently. However, they often won’t show all availability like Cathay Pacific’s own site will. Cathay Pacific doesn’t release all of its award inventory to partners.
How to monitor Cathay Pacific business and first class availability with ExpertFlyer
ExpertFlyer is an excellent tool to keep an eye on Cathay Pacific business and first class inventory. Just navigate to the “Flight Availability Search” tool and input your origin, destination, and travel dates. In the “Airline(s)” box, enter Cathay Pacific. If you’ve got an ExpertFlyer Premium plan, you can search for availability by selecting “+/- 3 days” from the drop-down menu.
You’ll then enter the relevant Cathay Pacific fare classes that you want to track. Cathay Pacific uses the following fare classes for business and first class inventory.
- Business class:
- Light: I
- Essential: D, P
- Flex: J, C
- First class:
- Flex: F, A
In short, “Light” is the bottom tier of business class, while “Flex” is the top tier. Both “Light” and “Essential” have the same features (identical baggage allowance, free seat pre-selection, earned Status Points, etc.), but you’ll typically pay less for flight changes, cancellations, and no-shows when booking Essential. Flex, on the other hand, charges no fees for cancellation or flight changes, though you may be subject to the difference in fare. Flex fares also give you the option to stand by for earlier flights.
Let’s take a look at travel between Hong Kong (HGK) and New York (JFK) in business and first class. We’ll enter all relevant fare classes so we’ve got a full picture of Cathay Pacific inventory.

Under “Available Classes,” you can see the minimum number of available seats in each class. You can also click the bell icon to the right to create alerts when there isn’t enough availability for a specific cabin. ExpertFlyer will then send you an email if/when Cathay Pacific opens enough inventory to meet the criteria of your alert.

Bottom line
Cathay Pacific flies from Hong Kong (HKG) to a total of nine North American cities, offering business class for all, but you’ll only find first class on select flights to Los Angeles (LAX) and New York (JFK). The best way to find these seats is through Cathay Pacific itself. Its search tool is a bit clunky, but it’s a truer representation of its inventory than looking at third-party or partner sites.
ExpertFlyer can give you an even more detailed look at business and first class availability with its “Flight Availability Search” tool. You can even set alerts for revenue fare buckets to notify you when more availability drops.
